Best of Show is chosen from among First in Class winners through a simple tally of the independent and secret ballots cast by the Chief Class Judges, the Honorary Judge Team Leaders, the Chief Judge, the Chief Honorary Judge, the Chairman and the Chairman Emeritus. In 2006, for the first time, the Runners-up to Best of Show were also announced.
First, Second and Third in Class winners are selected by our Class Judges based on originality, authenticity, and proper and excellent preservation or restoration.
Special Awards are generally selected by special committees of Honorary Judges.
We offer four Elegance Awards for styling, design and presentation:
J. B. Nethercutt Most Elegant Closed Car is awarded to the most elegant closed car present. The trophy is named for the man who won our top award, Best of Show, a record-setting six times. J. B. Nethercutt established the standards of authenticity and quality to which all Concours entrants now aspire.
Gwenn Graham Most Elegant Convertible Car is awarded to the most elegant convertible present. The trophy is named for the woman who helped to found the Pebble Beach Concours in 1950.
Most Elegant Open Car is awarded to the most elegant open car present. An open car has no windows, though it may have side curtains, as compared to a convertible car, which generally has roll-up windows.
Strother MacMinn Most Elegant Sports Car is awarded to the most elegant sports car present. The trophy is named for an esteemed automotive designer, historian and former Chief Honorary Judge.
Additional Special Awards are as follows:
Alec Ulmann Trophy is awarded to the most exciting Hispano-Suiza present. The trophy is named for the founder of the Sebring races. Ulmann was an important contributor to the hobby and to this Concours.
Ansel Adams Trophy is awarded to the most desirable touring car of its era. The trophy is named for the photographer who served often as an Honorary Judge at this Concours.
Art Center College of Design Award goes to the car that shows the best use of new technology in its era, has groundbreaking style engineering, and is considered to have had the greatest impact on car design today.
Briggs Cunningham Trophy is awarded to the most exciting open car present. The trophy is named for a great American sportsman and automobile creator and collector.
Chairman’s Trophy is awarded to the most deserving car present as selected by the Chairman.
Charles A. Chayne Trophy is awarded to the car with the most advanced engineering of its era. It is named for a former General Motors Vice President of Engineering who was a great supporter of this Concours.
Classic Car Club of America Trophy is awarded to the most significant classic car present.
Dean Batchelor Trophy is awarded to the most significant hot rod present. It is named for the noted auto writer and historian who served for years as one of our Honorary Judges.
Elegance in Motion Trophy is awarded to the car deemed to be most elegant in motion. To qualify for this award, a car must have successfully completed the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance.
Enzo Ferrari Trophy is awarded to the best Ferrari present. The Trophy is named for the Maestro himself.
FIVA Award goes to the best preserved prewar car as determined by a special committee guided by FIVA regulations.
The French Cup is awarded to the most significant car of French origin.
Lincoln Trophy goes to the most significant Lincoln present.
Lorin Tryon Trophy recognizes an automotive enthusiast who has contributed significantly to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It is named for the man who served as this event’s Co-Chairman for nearly three decades—a man whose passion and expertise drew the most elegant cars to Pebble Beach year after year.
Lucius Beebe Trophy is awarded to the Rolls-Royce considered most in the tradition of Lucius Beebe, a bon vivant who served among our early judges.
Mercedes-Benz Trophy is awarded to the most significant Mercedes-Benz present.
Mille Miglia Trophy is awarded to the most significant car eligible to participate in the Mille Miglia.
Montagu of Beaulieu Trophy is awarded to the most significant car present of British origin.
People’s Choice Award Presented by MSN Autos goes to an automobile chosen by a tally of votes cast online by individuals prior to the Concours.
Phil Hill Trophy is awarded to a race car. It is named to honor Phil Hill, the race driver and restorer who won the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and the Pebble Beach Road Races on multiple occasions.
Road & Track Trophy is awarded to the cars that the editors of that magazine would most like to drive.
Tony Hulman Trophy is awarded to the most significant open wheel race car present. Hulman owned the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for decades, and the Indianapolis 500 often started with his command, “Gentlemen, Start Your Engines.”
