Pebble Beach Auctions
presented by Gooding & Company

The gavel first fell at Pebble Beach back in 1990 and now the Pebble Beach Auctions, conducted by the highly regarded firm of Gooding & Company on both Saturday and Sunday evenings, are among the most anticipated events of Pebble Beach Automotive Week.

“The Pebble Beach Auctions are now viewed as leading indicators for the worldwide collector car and luxury car markets. In recent years, the success of these auctions has been due in large part to the high standards of Gooding & Company,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button in a recent interview.

The auction house has set numerous world records on the grounds of Pebble Beach, including the highest price paid for a car at a North American auction (the 1937 Bugatti 57SC Atlantic from the Peter and Susan Williamson Collection sold for $7,920,000 in 2008), an Alfa Romeo at auction (the 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Drop Head Coupe sold for $4,180,000 in 2009) and an Aston Martin road car at auction (the 1953 Aston Martin DB2/4 Drop Head Coupe sold for $1,650,000 in 2009). Most recently, in 2010, Gooding & Company sold the world’s most valuable car through a private transaction from its headquarters in Santa Monica (the 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic, formerly of the Peter and Susan Williamson Collection).

Automotive Fine Arts Society (AFAS) Exhibition

The latest creations of the finest automotive artists of our day are displayed annually at the Automotive Fine Arts Society (AFAS) Exhibition — located right on the show field of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The automobile changed the whole of our culture almost immediately upon its introduction; it was more than transportation, it served as a status symbol, it was a matter of style. But it took some time for the art world to view the automobile as an appropriate subject of fine art.

In 1983, a group of respected artists with automotive interests formed AFAS to rectify this. They organized their first major exhibition at the 1986 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and it was such a success that it quickly became a regular feature. In 2010, the exhibition celebrates its 25th anniversary!
